If you live in Fanwood, you already know the borough is small. What is easy to miss until you map it out is how much of the summer social calendar collapses into a single four-acre parcel off La Grande Avenue. The Recreation Commission, the Chamber of Commerce, and a rotating cast of local musicians have quietly turned that park into the town's outdoor living room from late June through mid-August 2026. Once you see the pattern, planning a Tuesday night gets a lot easier.
The Thesis: One Park, Two Weekly Rhythms
Most suburban towns spread their summer programming across three or four venues to hedge attendance. Fanwood does the opposite. La Grande Park hosts the season kickoff, the signature festival, and eight consecutive weeks of free movie nights, which means residents can build a repeatable weekly habit instead of tracking a calendar.

The Fanwood Recreation Commission is bringing back its popular "Movies Under the Stars" program this summer with eight free outdoor movie nights at La Grande Park, kicking off on Thursday, June 25, and continuing on Tuesday evenings through Aug. 11, featuring a mix of animated hits, family classics, and recent blockbuster releases. Films play on Fanwood Recreation's 16-foot-wide inflatable outdoor movie screen, starting at approximately 8:30 p.m. early in the summer and shifting to 8:00 p.m. by August as sunset times change. Bring a low beach chair. The grass slopes gently and blankets pick up dew after 9.
Fan Jam Is the One Sunday to Protect
If you only clear one date, make it Father's Day. Fan Jam returns to La Grande Park on Sunday, June 21, presented by Family Investors Company, running from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., free and open to the public. The lineup includes a beer garden, a kids zone, roughly 12 food booths and 40 exhibitors, and admission is free at 170 La Grande Avenue.
The music is deliberately local. Higher Ground, a Scotch Plains-based band, performs alongside Grateful Dead tribute band Strangers Stopping Strangers and acoustic guitarist Robert Matarazzo. A classic car show hosted by Hot Rod Mike Productions rounds out the afternoon. If you have kids who wilt in direct sun, arrive after 3 p.m. when the tent shadows lengthen and the car-show foot traffic thins.
Party in the Park four days later is the softer, kid-first version. The free community event runs from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and features live entertainment, games, food, rides, inflatables, a trackless train, a "Happy 250th" scavenger hunt, and a child-friendly challenge course. Attendees can stay for a free outdoor screening of Zootopia 2 as part of the Movies Under the Stars series, with a rain date of Tuesday, June 30.
The Carriage House Is the Indoor Counterweight
When the weather turns against you, or you want an evening that does not involve folding chairs, the Fanwood Performance Series is the local secret that outsiders never find. It runs at the Patricia M. Kuran Cultural Arts Center, better known as the Carriage House.
A few quirks worth knowing before you go:
- Location. The Carriage House sits at 135 Watson Road just west of Martine Avenue, next to Fanwood Borough Hall.
- How to hold seats. The series does not sell advance tickets but takes reservations restaurant-style by email at [email protected]. Seats are not assigned, and reservation holders are guaranteed a spot until showtime at 7 p.m., when unclaimed seats open to walk-ups.
- Bring cash. Suggested donation is $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, cash at the door.
The volunteer-run series is funded in part by a HEART grant from the Union County Board of County Commissioners, which is why you get nationally touring acts at Fanwood ticket prices.
The programming leans folk and jazz. The spring season closed with saxophonist Pat Gannon, a 2018 alumnus of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School and its Moonglowers jazz band, now performing on the New York jazz scene, bringing his Organ Quartet with sax, organ, guitar, and drums. Where to Eat Before or After
The stretch of South Avenue across from the train station has more options than it did eighteen months ago. Two anchors and a newer arrival worth knowing:
Panini Bistro, 226 South Avenue. The newest addition to the strip. The restaurant held a ribbon cutting on Saturday, January 25, at 226 South Avenue in Fanwood, across from the Fanwood Train Station, in the space that was previously the Seng Couture dress shop. The menu covers paninis, subs, wraps, burgers, soups, wings, and desserts, open from 10:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. seven days a week. Useful for a fast pre-movie pickup.
Jessica's Restaurant. The sit-down option locals send out-of-town family to. Consistently at the top of Yelp's ranking for Fanwood proper, and reservations on a Friday in July fill up a week ahead.
Ginger Sushi, South Avenue. Reliable for takeout when you want to eat on the park lawn. On most delivery apps for Fanwood.
If none of those hit, the near-in Fanwood roster also includes 387 Oyster House & Bar, Houdini Pizza Laboratory, Tasty Thai, Rotisserie, Darby Road Pub, Big C's Italian Grill, Publick House, and Stage House Tavern. Darby Road is the one that shows up on national broadcasts when the World Cup is on, which tells you something about the crowd energy on a Saturday night.
A Practical Weekly Template
Because the same park hosts so much, a Fanwood summer week almost designs itself:
- Tuesday evening. Movie at La Grande Park. Grab a panini on South Avenue at 7:15, walk over.
- Saturday, roughly once a month. Check the Fanwood Performance Series schedule at the Carriage House. RSVP by email.
- Father's Day weekend. Block off Sunday for Fan Jam. Skip the noon rush. Come at 3.
- Any weekday morning. The park itself is quiet and shaded before 10 a.m., which is when local dog walkers and stroller-pushers do their laps.
The one thing to watch: movie start times slide from about 8:30 p.m. in June and July to 8:00 p.m. by August, so a mid-August Tuesday needs an earlier dinner than a July one. Recreation posts weekly updates and rain calls on the Borough of Fanwood site.
Why This Matters for Long-Term Residents
A borough of Fanwood's size cannot support the kind of programming density you find in Westfield or Summit downtowns. What it does instead is concentrate the density. One park, one weekly slot, one small indoor stage a five-minute walk from Borough Hall. It is a different model, and it works better than it looks on paper because it turns the Recreation calendar into muscle memory instead of a monthly scavenger hunt.
